'Wicked' (stage musical)

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo sing 'For Good' in first 'Wicked: For Good' trailer

Good news, Ozians! It's almost time for "Wicked" to return from intermission.

The first trailer for "Wicked: For Good," the highly anticipated follow-up to the blockbuster musical "Wicked," has debuted in conjunction with a theatrical rerelease of the original film.

The footage teases the second half of the Broadway show, which picks up with the people of Oz living in fear of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) after she defied the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and was branded the Wicked Witch of the West.

Elphaba is shown to be in exile in the footage, speaking out against the Wizard as Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) is said to be hot on her trail. Ariana Grande and Erivo's emotional rendition of "For Good," the most famous song from the second half of "Wicked," plays throughout the trailer, and Erivo can also be heard singing "No Good Deed."

Dorothy Gale also appears at several points in the footage, teasing that the sequel will more directly incorporate the events of "The Wizard of Oz." In one shot, Dorothy stands before the Wizard alongside the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion.

But her face is never shown, and it's unclear whether it will be in the movie itself. No casting for Dorothy has been announced.

With "Wicked," director Jon M. Chu chose to split the story of the musical into two films, ending the first part just where the show takes an intermission. The sequel was originally known as "Wicked: Part Two" before being given the official title of "Wicked: For Good."

All of the main stars from the original "Wicked" will reprise their roles, including Ariana Grande as Glinda, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Marissa Bode as Nessarose and Ethan Slater as Boq.

But unlike the first movie, "Wicked: For Good" will feature two new, original songs that were not in the stage show. Chu told Vanity Fair one of the new songs is for Elphaba, while the other is for Glinda. Erivo previously told Variety she worked with composer Stephen Schwartz on one of the new songs, teasing, "When we filmed it, the entire crew was in tears. I hope audiences are ready — it's a song that speaks to the heart of who Elphaba is."

At CinemaCon in April, Grande teased that in "Wicked: For Good," Glinda has to "look at her reflection to figure out what it means to be Glinda the Good," while Erivo said Elphaba "has to learn how to use her powers for the betterment of good in exile." Producer Marc Platt also promised "more complexity and more profundity" in the two characters.

The original "Wicked" grossed more than $750 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film based on a Broadway musical in history. It earned 10 Oscar nominations, including best picture, and won the Academy Awards for best costume design and production design.

'Wicked: For Good' release date

"Wicked: For Good" will hit theaters almost exactly a year after the first film. It arrives on Nov. 21, 2025.
